At this time of year, walking down the high street, you will no doubt see all kinds of weird and wonderful offers from the travel agents. Winter breaks in general is big business, with some major destinations doing most of their business during the winter months. With so much choice for winter breaks, especially when travelling from the UK, we have to ask ourselves, where exactly is the best place to catch some much needed winter sun? When most people think of a winter on the beach, they think of Spain. Even through the temperatures aren’t that great when compared to destinations in Asia for example, they’re still a lot better than the UK. The South of Spain particularly. Another popular destination is the Faro region of Portgual. The Algarve is an extremely popular holiday destination at any time of the year, but in winter in particularly. Many Brits have purchased apartments and villas in the region and often flock there for the winter months. Of course, you don’t need to own your own villa to visit The Algarve this winter. Villas in The Algarve are often sub let by their owners to tourists, particularly out of season at a very reasonable price. Villa Holidays in The Algarve are becoming more and more popular, especially as more and more properties are bought up with a view to let to tourists.

Grief Tourism - An Emerging Market?

How many of you are familiar with Grief Tourism? Not many I assume, it’s fairly new to me but having investigated it a fair bit, I realise it is quite a popular elements of the tourist industry, with particular growth over the past couple of years. For those that are not in the know, Grief Tourism involves visiting places, well, of grief. Areas in the country where individuals have suffered in some way, such as previous battlefields or haunted locations. Grief Tourism in England is particularly attractive, mainly due to the fierce battles that have been fought here, not to mention that the country is littered with haunted venues that will entice even the most nervy tourist. Battlefield tourism is particularly popular, not just in England but all over the world. Mainly due to the history that these areas possess and the stories that the locals have to tell about their family and ancestors. Ghost Tourism is particularly popular in the United Kingdom also. The UK boasts some of the most haunted locations ever documented due to its somewhat violent history. This is always huge draw for tourists who want to witness haunted locations first hand with a view of seeing a ghost first hand.

Edinburgh - The Famed Beauty

The UK boasts of a lot of tourist places, but the place that really took my breath away is Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland. The city is more like a fantasy back drop you might imagine from a fairy tale. The buildings from Georgian and Victorian architects have lent a special ancient charm to it.

The place delights the eye and offers a lot of things to see and do. A must-see is the Edinburgh Castle. The castle houses the famous One O’Clock Gun, which fires every day at one (except for Sundays). In August, the Castle Esplanade showcases the annual Edinburgh Military Tattoo, in which the Army performs with music, marching and depictions of historical scenes. The famous Witches’ Well is also located in the north-east corner of the Esplanade.

Other places to visit are The Writer’s Museum, Museum of Childhood, City Art Center, and Edinburgh Zoo. Do visit the Scott and the Nelson Monuments that honor Sir Walter Scott and Admiral Lord Nelson respectively. Before planning your vacation, coordinate the dates with the festivals and other events in Edinburgh to maximise your vacation. Some interesting festivals are The Edinburgh Folk Festival, and exhibitions at the City Arts Center.

London City Breaks

One of the toughest activities to do in this modern life is to be able to take a holiday trip. A vacation does not mean just pack and choose an affordable destination; that was the way to go in a time long gone. However, nowadays it is important for you to be able to somehow balance the activities that will be waiting for your prompt return or that, if you are an employee of a middle level or higher, will come with you.

As you are already aware, everyone knows how to do their job until you go away on a vacation. It seems that everybody gets some sort of immediate Alzheimer’s disease, and they forget even where the pencils are stored! As a result, you can forget making plans for a luxurious trip to the Caribbean or to America; any trip that will take you further away than a day’s travel time will not be tolerated - and even boycotted. So what can you do? The best thing you can do is to look into London city breaks; great holiday opportunities that will allow you to explore, discover and entertain yourself within the distance that you need to have, to make sure that nothing goes wrong while you are not there (at least not officially).

Of course, a city break is different to a holiday away in some paradisiacal place where you can do anything and experience new things, but in general, most of us have modern lives that demand us to be nearby or to take just a day or two instead of the mandatory 10 to 15 days vacation time. Consequently, we are forced to seek the best alternatives that can accommodate this narrow window of time in terms of a holiday vacation.

City breaks are places and businesses inside the city that will allow you to rest and relax - if even moderately - when you do not have the time to leave your everyday life to visit the Bahamas or other exotic places. Why not spoil yourself at the Landmark Spa, a luxurious spa with different rates and services. You can also take the fantastic day spa package of the Landmark Spa and Health Club, just for a quick pick-me-up in the middle of your short holiday.

Nonetheless, that is not all that city breaks can offer you; a city break will be whatever you want it to be. You can make a city break simply by lodging at any of the many luxurious hotels in London, and spending one night being pampered with massages and high-class cuisine.

Budget Flights to the UK

Everyone knows how expensive plane tickets are. Whether you just want to travel to the next capital city, or overseas, plane fares can cost quite a bit. But travelling to the UK or anywhere in Europe – especially if you don’t live anywhere near the destination – is, well, exorbitant. However, budget flights can be found – you just need to look around and jump at the chance when it arises.

One thing to bear in mind is that holidays are more expensive when it is peak holiday season. Think of the times you want to go on holidays – school holiday times, Christmas, Easter – and you can bet your bottom dollar that everyone else wants to holiday then, too. So picking an off-peak time works in your favour. Less traffic on the roads, smaller queues at tourist attractions and – you guessed it – cheaper airfares. Budget flights abound on off-peak seasons.

If you have access to the internet (even if you don’t) booking some time ahead can also save you money. Many people leave things a little too late, and booking airfares and accommodation are two holiday necessities that many leave to the last minute – and end up paying through the nose for it. But if you plan ahead (way ahead) and book your plane tickets several months before you plan on taking your holiday, then you may be able to take advantage of cheaper airfares. You could also pay off your tickets as you go, and not be up for the entire cost in one hit. Also, you have plenty of time to plan your holiday, including accommodation, and not stress about missing out and having to sleep in your hire car!

If you plan ahead and find a cheaper airfare – jump at it! Don’t procrastinate, or you’ll miss the bargain. Even if it’s only a one-way ticket, you may be able to find a cheap return ticket at a later date. If not, you still save on the ticket you’ve bought at a discount rate.

On the other end of the scale, you can also grab budget flights by leaving it literally to the last minute. Many airlines drop the cost of their tickets within the last few days, to try and fill seats on flights that look like being less than full. If you’re game, and don’t mind last minute decisions, then leaving it to the last minute might just work in your favour!

Holiday in your own backyard

You live in London, and don’t have time for a holiday. Busy with work, the kids, your spouse or parents – and taking time off is the last thing on your mind. Have you thought about just having a day away from it all, with your family, and touring places closer to home? Be a tourist in your own town, and see the sites people fly in from all over the world to see. If you live in London, then you’re spoilt for choice. When I was there a few years ago, I spent a whole day in Harrods. I could not believe the amount and quality of items there. Luckily I later realised I could have had things shipped home – just as well as I spent a fortune on things I had to lug around London for the rest of my trip. Then we caught the underground to Madame Tussauds, and Piccadilly Circus, where we shopped up big in the Virgin store. Lunch was a sandwich from Pret-a-Manger. We had our photos taken in front of the Palace, and Westminster Abbey, and bought the tacky souvenirs. Stay in a hotel to make the experience authentic!

Cuba the Archipelago

I have to confess, I didn’t know Cuba was an archipelago – a series of islands, with Cuba being the main island of ‘The Republic of Cuba’ (Cuba is also loosely the name of the archipelago). But when I began researching my Cuba holiday a few years ago, I discovered that Cuba is the principal island and it is nestled amongst four groups of islands. Cuba is actually the seventh largest island in the world. And my favourite brand of shoes, Colorado, is the name of one of the groups of islands (the Colorados). The capital of Cuba is Havana, and it is also the largest city of Cuba (the island and the archipelago – I just like saying archipelago). Cuba flights fly into Havana, and it makes a great spot to begin your holiday.

As far as accommodation goes, Cuba has it all. When picking where you’ll stay, Cuba hotels are as varied as they are many. You can find yourself at a seaside resort, or at a dusty place in the backstreets where you’re surrounded by clubs offering salsa dancers and strong drinks.

For a great experience you can’t beat Cuba, so stock up on your pesos and grab a travel guide for one of the best holidays you’ll ever have.

Stonehenge

Tuesday

If you are planning a trip to the United Kingdom, a sight you will surely not want to miss is Stonehenge in Wiltshire County. Stonehenge is one of the most popular sites in the whole world. It is made up of large earthworks around a large circle of standing stones. Experts think the stones were built in 2200BC and the surrounding ditch and earth bank around 3100BC. Stonehenge is owned and maintained by the English Heritage.

There are over nine hundred rings of stone located in the British Isles and experts believe that at least double that amount was constructed originally. Due to the limited records concerning Stonehenge, explanations pertaining to the structure’s function are mostly left up to interpretation.

Stonehenge is the most visited and best known of the rings in the British Isles. The circle is three hundred twenty feet around with only one entrance. There are mysteriously fifty-six holes around the perimeter containing human remains that have been cremated. There was a sanctuary made out of wood located in the middle of the circle. The circle was lined up with the sunrise of midsummer, the sunset of midwinter, the southern rising of the moon and the northern setting of the moon. In 2150BC, the wooden sanctuary was replaced with bluestones and the entrance was widened.

Your whole family will enjoy a visit to the mysterious Stonehenge.

Jane Austen is the best know resident of Bath, England. She is most loved by the residents and visitors alike. Bath was Jane Austen’s home from 1801 until 1806.
