Manchester has often been referred to as the capital of the North (http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2008/aug/14/britishidentity.conservatives). It’s lively, vibrant, diverse, and always worth a visit – I never fail to enjoy myself up here. But, like most cities, it can be hard to find romance in this urban environment – renowned hotspots such as the Trafford Centre aren’t exactly ideal places for a date. Instead you need to dig just a little bit deeper and discover the lesser known romantic locations – yes, there really are some! Here are a few pointers to help you start Manchester dating (http://www.eharmony.co.uk/dating-manchester) in true Casanova style…
Best for a romantic picnic…
Naturally beautiful spots are always romantic settings. There are several gorgeous parks in Manchester – small snatches of greenery beneath the cityscape. These can make perfect dating locations, especially when you catch them at the right time of year. Why not take a picnic to St Michael’s Flags on the banks of the river Irk? Bring a blanket, pillows and some choice delicacies for a truly memorable and deeply romantic time.
Best for a romantic walk…
There is much to be said for just walking around and taking in the city together. Romantic walks may seem a bit outdated, but they work wonders – especially when your route has a few picturesque spots and food stalls where you can stop and pick up a shareable snack. I would recommend Castlefield (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Castlefield) for this particular type of date. Here there are systems of canals to explore, which are truly breathtaking in the evening. If you need a pick-me-up, there are also many waterside pubs to take a break in. You could even try a boat ride for a really Venetian vibe!
Best for a romantic day out…
One of my favourite dates in Manchester was a daytime jaunt out of the city to Cheshire and the Jodrell Bank Observatory Visitor’s Centre. Here you will find the marvel of science that is the third largest radio telescope in the world. For a small sum, you can literally fly your date to the moon and play among the stars in a virtual 3D tour of the solar system. If this sounds a little geeky, don’t worry – I had reservations about the idea at first, but it really is both a romantic and fascinating way to spend the day. The surrounding countryside is also very picturesque, and the local village is very pleasant to amble through.
Best for a romantic view…
It may sound a bit cliche, but there’s nothing like a good view to spark off a bit of romance. The Manchester Wheel – much like the London Eye – is an inexpensive and fun way to spend part of a date. I say part because it doesn’t take very long to go around the wheel! It is especially romantic after sundown, with the glittering lights of the city spread out beneath you. Sunset would be an even more perfect time to go, but this requires some very careful planning!
Best for a romantic meal…
There are many, many places to eat in Manchester. But my absolute favourite for a date would have to be the River Restaurant at the Lowry. Overlooking the Irwell, this stylish yet affordable outlet really is a fantastic place to take a date for a meal.
Manchester really is a wonderful place to explore for dating UK (http://www.eharmony.co.uk/) men and women. Check out some of these memorable places for the best and most romantic of Manchester dates!
